7 Steps to Upgrade your Closet! Free and Sustainable
~ To be honest, life is way too beautiful to worry about who’s grass is greener.
M. NELLA
I think we all have experienced this in the morning…
You open your closet and quickly look for an outfit to wear. You don’t have much time because you need to be on time for school or work, so you just wear the same thing as almost everyday.
You know… that outfit that you keep wearing on repeat. Maybe you have a few outfits like these.
The question that follows is:
“Do you really feel confident and authentic in this outfit?”.

YES —> Good for you. But do you really wanna wear this everyday?
NO —> We are gonna work on this in a minute.
No matter the answer that you gave to this question, there is never a good excuse to not give your closet an upgrade.
And nope!
This upgrade doesn’t require you to spend 2k dollars on clothing! It also doesn’t require you to give up your ethics and/or morals, since these tips are all sustainable!
I will just stop writing now and begin with explaining all my tips. I really hope that you find these tips useful and get more wear out of your closet.
1. Reorganize your closet
Okay so here is the first step to take: REORGANIZE.
I know what you may be thinking: “Really?!”. But yes friends, it’s really necessary. I think we forget about half of the clothes that are stored in our closet.
There are lots of different ways you can reorganize your closet. One way you can do this is by color. However, I find this way a little less productive. It will look very neat, but you will still have to search for the perfect blouse all over the place.
Categorizing your clothing by piece is the best way to go. Have all your t-shirts, jeans and skirts in one place. Most of us are probably already doing this. What I like to do as an extra is to have my favorite/basics on top. This way my eyes fall quicker on them.
I like to ‘deep’ clean my closet at least 2 times a year, when spring starts and when autumn starts. I move the pieces that are out of season to the back of my closet and move my favorite pieces of that season to the front. I also put away clothes that I don’t really like anymore. I don’t throw them away, unless they are ripped or too small for me.

2. Pinterest addict
Since I’m a big Pinterest lover, I love this step. For this step, you will need to have a pinterest account.
I assume most of you guys already have this. However, if you don’t, I recommend you create an account. It’s free and gives you so much inspiration.
So how is pinterest going to help you upgrade your closet?
I use pinterest to find outfit inspiration. One way you can do this is by going through your closet. Step 1) Find a piece of clothing that you don’t know how to wear.
For example: a black skirt
Step 2) You now go to pinterest and search for “outfit black skirt”. You can do this with any piece of clothing.
What I like about pinterest is that there are many outfit ideas from people all over the world. You can find new ways of wearing a piece of clothing that you would have never thought of.
And for all my trendsetters & fashionistas…
Pinterest is a great tool to find the newest trends. And by trends I don’t mean the fashion trends that will go in one season or are only seen in the Fashion Weeks. No… I mean the trends that last for longer. How fashion is changing & evolving.
3. Fill the gaps
Now that we have found out what you like to wear and more importantly: How you are going to wear it! We can focus on filling the gaps.
And I know I told you this was a free way to upgrade your closet. However, I believe this step can be very beneficial in the long term. You can skip this step if you want the free version.
So what does filling the gaps exactly mean?
It means that you have to see what’s missing in your outfits. Maybe you have a lot of colored pants, but not really a good basic item to wear on top. By investing in a good quality white basic skirt/blouse you will get more wear out of your clothing. Since, it’s easier to mix & match!
So yes, you have to invest a bit of money here. But in the long run you will have more outfits to wear!

4. Make new looks
It’s time for the fun part!
Creating new looks you feel confident and authentic in!
You can recreate looks from pinterest and make pictures of them. Of course, you can also just wear outfits that you already are in love with.
A low effort way you can do this is by making a picture of the outfit you are wearing if you love it. The thing that can happen is that you stay (too) much in your comfort zone. It’s always good to try new things.
Just be you and try new things!
5. Clothing swap w/ friends
Of course you can also swap clothes with friends. It is very useful if you guys have the same size. So if you are really petite(like me 😎) or very long, this may be harder.
We all know the saying: “the grass is always greener on the other side.”
Therefore, who can not check out the grass in the closet of your friends?
But… We shouldn’t forget to be grateful for what we have in our closet and life.
To be honest, life is way too beautiful to worry about who’s grass is greener.
Be grateful for the grass you have!
6. Change the perspective
I already explained this step a little bit. But I think it deserves to be said separately.
There are a lot of ways to wear clothes. Of course you wear pants on the bottom and shirts on the top.
But… The ‘how‘ can be different.
Exploring pinterest and instagram will show you how others are wearing clothes and you can take inspiration from this.
Wear clothing in a new way, from a different perspective!

7. Upgrade your shoe-game
Here is another step that’s going to include spending some money. However, I think this can absolutely change the (shoe)game.
We have all heard that women look at a man’s shoes, so for women… shoes are important.
I think shoes don’t have to be loud with colors and extra things. Let the clothes speak.
The shoes are here to support you, literally 😎
I own a pair of very basic and minimalistic white sneakers and I wear these almost everyday in spring and autumn.
It’s better to invest in shoes that are a little pricier, but look really basic and represent your style. Then to buy cheap ones that can’t match with all your clothing.
Summary
As you can see, some steps required you to spend money. So yeah… the title isn’t 100% true. However, I do think that this will serve you in the long term.
And remember, you don’t have to do all these steps. These are just some ways you can give your closet an update.
